"Melbourne loves a musical
and we are fortunate to have Magnormos"
- Herald Sun
by Aaron Joyner in 2002 with an original Australianised adaptation
of Stephen Schwartz's WORKING, Magnormos has been contributing to Melbourne's thriving theatrical scene with a variety of initiatives.
The gala OzMade Musicals concerts and accompanying development programs have assisted the development and promotion of over 50 Australian musicals, and through innovative production programming many Australian and landmark international works have been presented in Melbourne (and often Australia) for the first time. These include the Green Room Award winning FLOWERCHILDREN (2013 and 2011) and THE HATPIN (2011), as well as [TITLE OF SHOW] (2010), LIFE'S A CIRCUS (2009), THE THING ABOUT MEN (2008), MARY BRYANT (2007), FLORA THE RED MENACE (2007) and A BUNCH OF RATBAGS (2005).
"The city's pioneering musical theatre company"
- The Age
In 2010 Magnormos initiated a partnership with Melbourne Recital Centre to celebrate the 80th birthday of Stephen Sondheim with A SONDHEIM TRIPTYCH, which presented three Sondheim musicals as one-night-only productions over three weeks. Receiving international media attention A SONDHEIM TRIPTYCH became the Australian contingent of the international celebrations for Mr. Sondheim's birthday, and fostered a partnership that created two more writers triptychs. In 2011 Magnormos presented a JERRY HERMAN TRIPTYCH at Melbourne Recital Centre, and in 2013 featured the repertoire of the Magnormos International Patron: Mr. Stephen Schwartz, who came to Melbourne to be a part of the event, including featuring in a special 'In Conversation' hosted by the Magnormos Artistic Director, Aaron Joyner.
Outside of the OzMade Musicals achievements, Magnormos
has provided intensive developmental and workshop assistance to
two new works: BETTER THAN BROADWAY and FLOWERCHILDREN (which was later taken to full production by Magnormos). In 2004
Magnormos was responsible for JOE STARTS AGAIN being the first
Australian musical to participate in the New York
Music Theatre Festival (NYMF).
Initially starting as a one-off fundraiser idea, Magnormos entertained the Melbourne theatre community with a series of Musical Theatre Trivia Nights across a number of years. Hosts included Julia Zemiro, Jan van de Stool (Queenie van de Zandt) and Lyall Brooks.
Magnormos operates the Australian Musicals.com website and the MAGTIX ticketing service.
