Deidre Rubenstein has had an extensive career in theatre, working nationwide with all the major theatre companies: MTC, STC, QTC,Nimrod, STC OF SA, Playbox, Bell Shakespeare Co. and the Stables. She has had a long association with the Melbourne Theatre Company and appearances there in recent years include LIFE WITHOUT ME, RICHARD 111, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, THE HISTORY BOYS, THE CLEAN HOUSE, THE WORLD'S WIFE, BIRTHRIGHTS, LIFEx3 and THE SEAGULL.
Other highlights in theatre include leading roles in: MOTHER COURAGE, CLOUD 9,TOP GIRLS, THREE SISTERS, WILD HONEY, ABSURD PERSON SINGULAR, THE WINTER'S TALE, LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES, MORNING SACRIFICE, FALLING FROM GRACE, HEROIC MEASURES and BROKEN GLASS.
She has been involved in many music theatre productions and these include : THE BOYFRIEND (directed by author Sandy Wilson), THE TWENTIES AND ALL THAT JAZZ, YOU AND THE NIGHT AND THE HOUSE WINE, VARIATIONS ( written for her by Nick Enright and Terry Clarke), CANDIDE, IMPROVEMENT: DON LEAVES LINDA, BYE BYE BIRDIE, BAT BOY and the original production of MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL.
She has devised and performed in three highly acclaimed one-woman shows, all with text and song. DOROTHY PARKER SAYS which had successful seasons at Mietta's, the Arts Centre and the Stables, WHAT'S A GIRL TO DO which played nationally and at the Edinburgh Festival and CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS, written for her by seven of Australia's top playwrights,originated at Playbox and travelled to Harare, Hong Kong, New York and London.
She has worked extensively in cabaret from the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney to Mietta's in Melbourne.
Deidre is an AFI Award winner for the ABC mini series PALACE OF DREAMS and other television work includes continuing roles in INTRODUCING GARY PETTY, NEIGHBOURS, GP, MERCURY, POSSESSION and WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE. She has played guest roles in CITY HOMICIDE, KICK, MDA, THE SECRET LIFE OF US, BLUE HEELERS, RAFFERTY'S RULES and A COUNTRY PRACTICE among others. Her film work includes SALVATION, HEY HEY IT'S ESTHER BLUBERGER and SIAM SUNSET.
Deidre is also a multi award winning narrator of audio books. She has been a proud member of Equity since 1967.
