A graduate of the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Derek began working professionally in 1987 with the State Opera of South Australia, then Opera Queensland, appearing in productions of MADAMA BUTTERFLY, LA TRAVIATA, CARMEN, ORFEO ED EURIDICE, PAGANINI, THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, LA BOHEME and IL TROVATORE.

He made his musical theatre debut as Monsieur Reyer in the original Australian cast of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne in 1990. Roles since then include Eugene in GREASE in Thailand, Timothy in the original Australian cast of THE SECRET GARDEN, Tobias Ragg in the Queensland Theatre Company production of SWEENEY TODD and Hugh the Iron in the Australian musical, CRUSADE.

In 1998 he received much critical acclaim for his performance as Mary Sunshine in the Australian/Asian tour of CHICAGO, before being invited in 2000 to play the role in the London production at the Adelphi Theatre. Since returning to Australia, Derek has played Padre Perez in MAN OF LA MANCHA, Mr Snow in CAROUSEL and Artie Green in SUNSET BOULEVARD, both for The Production Company and Bustopher Jones/Gus/Growltiger in the new Asian tour of CATS.

Derek was most recently seen as Monsieur Andre in the 2007-2009 Australian revival production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
