To mark the ten year anniversary of Magnormos in 2012, the eigth OzMade Musicals made a glittering return to the Comedy Theatre on Monday 27 August 2012, partnered with a special presentation commemorating ten years of Magnormos productions.
Hosted by the Magnormos founder and Artistic Director Aaron Joyner, the evening included many special announcements about the Magnormos future.
The first announcement of the night was the appointment of Tony and Olivier nominated star of the Australian stage Mr TONY SHELDON as the new national patron of OzMade Musicals.
As a two time host and member of the OzMade submission panel for a number of years, Tony has long been a valued contributor to the growth of OzMade Musicals, and Magnormos is very proud to acknowledge him in an official ambassador position.
The second announcement, made a little later in the evening, was the appointment of Oscar and Grammy award winning composer of WICKED, Mr. STEPHEN SCHWARTZ as the new international patron of OzMade Musicals. Magnormos is honoured to welcome such an important artist in the musical theatre industry as the new international ambassador for OzMade Musicals.
The OzMade audience was treated to a special video message from Mr. Schwartz himself, who accepted his ambassadorship, and made a further announcement of his impending collaboration with Magnormos in 2013 for a STEPHEN SCHWARTZ TRIPTYCH.
Other announcements on the night included a 2013 season of FLOWERCHILDREN at the Comedy Theatre.
The performance program included a mixture of new and existing Australian musicals.
Opening the night was an OzMade Flashback to the cabaret musical GOBSMACKED by Nikki Aitken and Jamie Burgess. The song was the hilarious and upbeat Dinner Date performed by Nikki Aitken.
This was followed by an On The Drawing Board presentation of the new work PARTNERS by Peter Fitzpatrick and Anthony Costanzo. The audience were treated to a fifteen minute selection from the relationship drama, directed by Paul Watson, and musically directed by Cameron Thomas, with performances by Gavin D Andrew, Sally Bourne, Georgina Frazer, Rosa McCarty, Barry Mitchell, James Pulbrook-Flynn, Sue Ellen Shook, David Rogers-Smith and David Spencer.
The next OzMade Flashback was DREAMSONG by Hugo Chiarella and Robert Tripolino, performed by Sam Ludeman and first year students from VCA Music Theatre.
To complete OzMade Musicals 2012, we had another fifteen minute On The Drawing Board presentation, this time from the Matthew Robinson musical HAPPY PEOPLE, a zany look at the backstage life of a snappy children's television performance group. The debut segment was directed by Christopher Parker, musically directed by James Simpson and choreographed by Michael Ralph, with performances by Maureen Andrew, Blake Bowden, Matt Heyward, Alex Rathgeber, Kellie Rode and Taneel Van Zyl.
