Since 2010 Magnormos has been celebrating the career of a significant musical theatre writer with a performance triptych at Melbourne Recital Centre. Three musicals, presented one-night-only, each one week apart, featuring some of Australia's finest performing talent.

STEPHEN SCHWARTZ OzMade Musicals international patronOur third writers triptych in 2013 showcased the career of the Magnormos International Patron: Broadway's STEPHEN SCHWARTZ.

With a career spanning over four decades and an incredible roll-call of hit musicals and movies including WICKED, GODSPELL, PIPPIN and the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's MASS, Stephen Schwartz is a Broadway legend. The composer and lyricist has won four Grammy Awards and three Academy Awards, has been nominated for six Tony Awards, and worked with a who's who of American show business stars.

To celebrate his career, Magnormos presented three one-night-only performances of the Stephen Schwartz repertoire at the stunning Melbourne Recital Centre, GODSPELL, PIPPIN and CHILDREN OF EDEN.

GODSPELL

GODSPELL tells the timeless tale of community, loyalty and friendship. Featuring the orchestrations from the 2011
Broadway revival, this is GODSPELL like you've never heard it before. First staged in 1971 Off-Broadway before embarking on a successful Australian tour (including a #1 single of Day By Day by Colleen Hewett), GODSPELL is Schwartz's first major work and opens the Triptych in true Magnormos style.

PIPPIN

A hip, anachronistic fairy tale captivating audiences everywhere, PIPPIN premiered on Broadway in 1972 under the direction of Bob Fosse and ran for 1,944 performances before closing in 1977. Recently it recieved the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival for the current 2013 Broadway production. With soaring ballads and infectious dance numbers, the energetic, pop-influenced score celebrates the simple joys of life.

CHILDREN OF EDEN

Using the Book of Genesis as the foundation for a universal story of growing up and growing apart, Schwartz's heartfelt CHILDREN OF EDEN is both joyous and inspiring. Yet to recieve a Broadway premiere, the musical has still captivated communities across the world, and as Stephen's self-confessed 'personal favourite' - what better way to close the triptych than with the Australian professional premiere of CHILDREN OF EDEN.
